About Dawna
My name is Dawna Leung. I hold a Master of Psychotherapy and Counselling (Western Sydney University) and am a member of PACFA.
But more than my qualifications, I bring lived experience of recovery. I don’t just talk about it – I lead with it. That doesn’t mean your journey looks like mine. It means I’ll never pathologise what you’re going through. I’ll meet you there.

Behind the counselling room
Outside private practice, I lead The Overcomers Place as CEO — a trauma-informed day program for people in recovery from addiction. That work has confirmed everything I believe about healing: it happens in community, through connection, and with care. Since 2024, I’ve also served as a Youth Justice Convenor, championing restorative justice practices for young people — work I find profoundly meaningful.
Before that, I spent sixteen years as Founder of Mandarin Stars, a play-based language school born from a mother’s wish to connect her children to their heritage through play.
What do these have in common? They taught me patience, creativity, and how to hold space for imperfection and small wins. That same energy shows up here at Safe Space For Change.
My Values
Self-compassion – You deserve the same kindness you give others.
Strong empathy – I don’t just listen. I try to truly understand.
The courage to be vulnerable – Real healing starts when we risk being seen.
Community. Connection. Care.
A note for women struggling with addiction
Addiction can look different for women. The stats are real. The shame is heavier. And too often, women carry it alone.
Whether you want 1:1 counselling with me here at Safe Space For Change, or are looking for a day program, you’re welcome here.
English and Cantonese Options
I offer counselling in English and Cantonese. If you feel more comfortable expressing yourself in Cantonese, we can work in whichever language suits you best.
